Civic Builders developed this 90,000 square foot project which was to become the permanent home of Excellence Charter School of Bedford Stuyvesant. The school facility houses 29 classrooms, administrative spaces, an auditorium, a cafeteria, a gym, a science room, library, art studio, auxiliary educational spaces and a 10,000 square foot rooftop play space.

Civic’s pre-construction project management of Excellence’s project consisted of securing the necessary zoning override from the Deputy Mayor’s office on behalf of the school, managing the environmental review, remediation, design, value-engineering and approvals, and conducting a formal bidding process for contractors. Civic’s ongoing involvement included construction management, continued value-engineering, and procurement of furniture and equipment. Civic also worked closely with the school and its funders to meet the evolving requirements related to securing funds through the New York City Department of Education’s capital budget.

Excellence Charter School of Bedford Stuyvesant is operated by Uncommon Schools Inc., a nonprofit charter management organization that starts and manages some of the most outstanding urban college preparatory charter schools in the Northeast. Created by Norman Atkins, a founder of the Robin Hood Foundation, Uncommon Schools’ mission is to build great schools by developing and managing philosophically aligned, highly accountable, and geographically linked networks.

100% of Excellence Boys 6th graders scored proficient or above on the 2010 New York State math exams compared to just 31% of students in the local school district.
