In August 2006 Civic Builders completed Bronx Lighthouse Charter School, one of its many projects in the South Bronx. Civic converted a parking garage into a 43,000 square foot charter facility that will serve 520 students in grades K-8. The original structure, which dates from 1920, included a large backyard space and is conveniently situated on Intervale Avenue two blocks from the Bill Rainey Memorial Park and one block from the 2/5 Subway line. The project included a gut renovation and full build out of the 15,000 square foot former parking garage with 28,000 square feet of new space added.

Bronx Lighthouse Charter School opened in temporary space in Hunts Point  in Fall 2004 as the first in a growing network of charter schools operated by Lighthouse Academies. As a national nonprofit charter management organization (“CMO”), Lighthouse Academies provides the curriculum, skills and expertise to ensure the success of schools such as Bronx Lighthouse. The mission of the CMO and its Bronx Lighthouse school is to “prepare students for college through a rigorous arts-infused program. All students will be taught by an outstanding teacher in a nurturing environment and will achieve at high levels. Each student will develop the knowledge, skills and values necessary for responsible citizenship and life-long learning.” The Lighthouse network is results-driven and works with local communities to create new, high-quality educational choices for students. Their goal is to “fundamentally change public education.”
