Achievement First Endeavor will find its future home in a former ice cream factory, transformed into a 6-story facility that will serve over 700 students at scale. This development, which brings high quality educational options to central Brooklyn, is a collaboration between Civic Builders, Achievement First and the NYC Department of Education.
Achievement First Endeavor (AF Endeavor) is a relatively new charter school, having opened in the fall of 2006 with a fifth grade class of 84 students. For information on Achievement First's academic success, see below.
The school is currently housed in the top floor of an existing NYC public school building. This incubation space is limited and will not continue to meet the needs of the school, which expects to add at least one new grade level each year until it reaches capacity. Civic and AF partnered when AF decided to find a permanent facilities solution in Brooklyn. After an extensive real estate search, a building was purchased in December 2006.
The new facility will include 33 classrooms, as well as music rooms, art studios, a gymnasium and rooftop play spaces. Construction is in progress and will be completed before the end of 2009.
Achievement First: A Success Story
AF Endeavor falls under the auspices of the Achievement First nonprofit charter management organization (CMO). Achievement First's unparalleled track record began in 1999 with the success of its first charter school, Amistad Academy in New Haven, Connecticut. As a result of consistent academic success in its schools, Achievement First has become one of the nation's most widely respected charter school operators and was invited by Schools Chancellor Joel Klein to open academies in New York City. In addition to Achievement First's six academies in Connecticut (all of which are exceptionally high performing), the CMO has opened six new academies in Brooklyn over the past three years.
